Can I make it as an insurance agent?

Matt asked:

OK- So I’m a regular life/health agent who places a lot of value in sports and staying healthy- I feel I need to be in the gym at least every other day. I also have a girlfriend who is constantly upset with me working the long hours of an insurance agent such as 9am-9pm on a consistent basis and I’ve found myself making more time for her and cancelling appointments, thus hurting my sales performance. Is a 23yr old guy who wants to stay healthy and maybe have some time with his gf on the weeknights a bad example of a life insurance agent? Or do I just need to readjust some lifestyle moves? I would gladly appreciate any and all comments from all different types of agents on whether or not my lifestyle can be that of an agent… or do I need to get on the “new career bus”?

get your money! im a woman and i understand how important it is to have time with my man. so i say this: spend less time at the gym.i know you want to stay healthy but you dont have to go 4 days a week. bring her with you or do something active with her like dog walking in the park, etc. dont lose a good woman over something so simple. good luck.

you don’t have to be in Sales and work horrid hours to be an Insurance Agent. I hold an Agent license in 6 states and work a steady 0800-1830 four days a week!

You’re working some extremely long hours. I manage a insurance agency with offices in 4 states, soon to be 5 states. I also sell policies, make over 6 figures a year while working a steady 8:30 to 5:30 M-F. Yea, there is an occasional late night, but they are few and far between. I go to the gym on a regular basis, coach youth sports and donate some time for charity work, meet my buds for a beer and still spend tons of time with my family.

Look at your schedule and see where you can make changes to best utilize your time. I work out before going to the office. That helps me kick start my day.

Let put it this way, selling insurance is a business. you need to think like a business man and manage your yourself as a company. Meaning you need to set sales goal, manage your cost and maximise your profit. Marketing and sales activities are part and parcel of our job. Policy servicing, attending training and learning new things are important.

Bottom line in prioritised your activities
    ie 80 % ~ business related ; 20% ~ Personal related

once you have a successful business you can afford
    ie 80% ~ Personal ; 20% Business

Lifestyle is irrelevant. To be a successful agent, the first five years or so you have to be willing to commit to 60 to 80 hour workweeks.

If you can’t do that, you’re not going to make it.
