How do I become an Insurance Agent?

babyeedoll asked:

I live in NM, I tried looking up basic info, but it’s not plentiful. How do I become an insurance agent? I was thinking auto, but do most agents do auto, life, etc? Is it something I can do mainly from home?

If you decide to sell Property & Casualty you really need to get working with a company, therefore you will have to have an office, which they usually provide for a period of time. Please be careful as to what company you choose read the contract, ask questions, talk to agents before you sign anything. Go to your states Commerce and Insurance Dept for details as to what you need to do, to get a license. Health insurance can be sold from your home, but most people will not by from someone out of their home. There is really soooo much to learn I highly recommend working with someone. Once you get your license you can be an agent or a producer for an agent. Agents usually have quotas to meet, producers usually do not.

In most states you will need some sort of license. Contact your state licensing department for more information. In most cases, the licence will be different for the different type of insurances (property, life, etc).

Working from home, with a seperate office area, is probably something you can do if you are an independent broker. If you are an agent working for an employer, working from home will depend on the views of your employer.

You become an agent, by passing a test. The information is on your state insurance department’s website.

But it’s much, much harder to get a company willing to let you sell their policies, especially if you have no track record.

Mostly, you’re NOT going to sell insurance, sitting in your house. You’ll have to knock on doors, pound the pavement, etc.

If you have no experience in sales, or in insurance, your best bet is to find a local agent who will train you, and let you use their contracts, for a commission split.

Most new agents - 95% - wash out.
