How do I find a good life insurance agent?

I am expecting my first child by the end of the year. I want to purchase life insurance, but I would like to go through an independent agent/broker as they work with multiple companies and can get me the best rate. I have a very solid idea of what I want (20 - 30 yr. term, roughly $750K - $1MM). Where should I start looking? Google only turned up th expected advertising links and results for the big boys. I am new in my town, so no people to ask for referrals.

    Try your local phone book. They will have people there. If you are absolutely positive that you know what you want and it’s the right choice, you may be able to just purchase it on-line, but you will not receive a lot of guidance. Make sure you don’t just buy off price alone. Make sure that the company has good ratings from AM Best, Moody’s and S & P. You want to be sure that the company will be around for the full term.

    Million Dollar Round Table.MDRT, is the top notch group of Life Insurance professionals. Ask the agent if he is a member.

    The theory being, they can’t be the best if they can’t do the best job for their clients. You get professionalism, experience and knowledge.

    start with the guy that writes your house insurance and car insurance. Most likely, he’s the guy that can get you 5-10 quotes on life, as well.
